South Dakota – grasslands of astounding natural vistas, startling beauty and some of the most wonderous attractions in North America. The state of South Dakota is center of numerous attractions, from petrified forests to Badlands National Park and dinosaur bones galore. However, one of the most treasured attractions in the state is Mount Rushmore. This amazing piece of American heritage draws millions of visitors from around the country and the world each year on their South Dakota Family Vacation.

What is Mount Rushmore? Most travelers are familiar with the image of the mountainside chiseled away to reveal the faces of four of our nation’s most wonderous presidents. You’ll find George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln – much bigger than life! It is always a great experience to visit South Dakota Black Hills any time of year.

Started in 1927, Mount Rushmore is one of the most wonderous feats of engineering and craftsmanship in the country. Also called the “Shrine of Democracy,” Mount Rushmore took 14 years and an astounding $1 million dollars to build. However, its value today cannot be estimated.

Visitors follow the Avenue of Flags from the concession building to the viewing area for the monument. Visitors can enjoy a view through binoculars, or they can bring their cameras and video cameras for better viewing pleasure. However, no magnification is needed to appreciate the enormous size and incredible engineering required to create this amazing monument to democracy. While the monument enshrines the history of American presidents, it encompasses the ethics for worldwide freedom and democracy.

In addition to simply observing the monument, visitors can enjoy numerous interpretive programs and amazing exhibits. Enjoy a exposition at the Lincoln Borglum Museum and discover how the incredible monument came to be. You can also enjoy an Evening Sculpture Lighting event, ranger guided tours through the park. Several styles of guided walks are available, including the Sculptor’s Studio, Presidential Trail and others.

considering the Mount Rushmore National Monument is the obvious draw for the park, you’ll find that the park is abounding with wildlife and plant life. You can enjoy numerous hikes and viewing areas where you can enjoy the park’s unique ecology, with Mount Rushmore as an astounding backdrop. In addition to wildlife and plants, campers can appreciate a number of different science exhibits, sculpture classes and much more. A vacation to Mount Rushmore is much more than simply a part of American history; the park is alive and growing; visitors can experience all there is to see and do in this wonderful place.
