Visiting Alaska - Discovering America’s Last Frontier

July 01, 2008 By: Mr Vacation Category: Vacations

Have you visited Alaska yet? The largest state in the union is home to some amazing sights. Folks that visit Alaska can’t imagine how much there is to see and do. A week of vacation just doesn’t seem long enough to take in the gorgeous views. So, visit often.

Alaska is home to the tallest peak in North America, Mount McKinley. This mountain can be found in Denali National Park. Yes, that’s where the name of the SUV comes from. Denali is Alaska’s first national park and the only one in the country that uses sled dogs as guard dogs. These dogs help to provide security in the park.

Denali is accessed by bus or shuttle rides using its one main road. The biggest attraction is not the tree-lined hills or the clean air but the animals. Tourists hope to catch a glimpse of moose, caribou, grizzly bears, sheep, and wolves. In any other setting, these five would send us scurrying for our lives. But these tourist attractions in Alaska and many others are a welcomed sights.

The tourist season for Denali National Park is between May and September. The summers here are short and the winter much, much longer. When the temperatures drop to dangerous levels, visiting is not such a good idea for the average sightseer.

Tourists come to Alaska and Denali specifically for personal challenges. Every climber wants their chance at Mount McKinley. Not even fifty percent of those that attempt the journey make it to the top. I guess the triumph is in the trying not necessary reaching the summit. On their way up, climbers can take a gander at several glaciers floating by: Muldrow Glacier, Traleika Glacier, and Peters Glacier.

Ever see that movie, Snow Dogs? It brings to mind the next point of interest, the Iditarod dog sled race. This famous race, run each year, is a 1,150 mile trek from Anchorage to Nome. Teams consist of twelve to sixteen dogs with a human leader called a musher.

The trip could take as long as two and a half weeks to complete along icy and treacherous terrain. No wonder people are attracted to it. The race draws people from all walks of life to try their hand at leading a dog sled team. Mushers must have a good command of their dogs and their survival skills in order to complete the race at all. The Iditarod travels along a trail that was once a supply route in Alaska. Instead of ponies, the mail and gold was hauled by mushers and their trained sled dog teams.

Avid fishermen visit Alaska to see the largest catch of their lives. Alaska is known for their salmon, but did you also know that they are famous for halibut as well? Some can be as big as 250 pounds. What a fish! Here, it’s not about the number, but the weight of the catch that rules the day. Planning any Alaska fly fishing trip would be the adventure of a lifetime for sport fishermen and weekend fishermen alike.

Taking along an experienced guide is a good idea if you plan a fishing trip to Alaska. A guide can show fishermen where the best salmon and largest halibut are found. A guide worth his salt can keep fisherman unfamiliar with Alaskan waters from getting lost or going around in circles trying to find what they are looking for. The best salmon are found along Ketchikan and Sitka.

People from Alaska travel almost 400 miles to see this next attraction. It is the Aurora Borealis, which is more commonly known as The Northern Lights. The further north you are, the better the light show. The best time to see this phenomenon while on your Alaska trip is between August and April.

After a few days of bright sunshine, the lights seem to grow brighter than ever. Some see the lights as a flowing ribbon of electric light traveling across the sky. Others see it as a shower of bright colors. The important thing is to catch a glimpse of heaven in all its glory.

Dude Ranch Vacations and Summer Vacations

June 30, 2008 By: Mr Vacation Category: Vacations

Not long ago I needed some last minute vacation ideas, so I went online searching for an unique all inclusive family vacation. I came across a very interesting website for CLEAR CREEK DUDE RANCH which offers vacation packages for horseback riding and much more in a beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain getaway.

horseback riding
It had been 30 years since I had been on horseback, and my wife and 2 children had never ridden before. However, we decided to try something new, and rather than go to the beach like usual, we headed for the Great Smokey Mountains in North Carolina to see if we could rustle up some horses.

We took off at dawn and got there just before lunch time. The drive through the mountains was breathtaking, and the view from the front porch of the main lodge at Clear Creek Guest Ranch was equally impressive. We were escorted to our cozy and comfortable cabin, and we had just enough time to unpack our gear before heading back up to the main lodge to eat.

great smoky mountains
The food was mouth watering and plentiful. It was served family style in big bowls on a ‘Lazy Susan’ in the middle of our big round table. Soon after lunch, with the help of one of the many friendly ‘wranglers’ at the Dude Ranch, we picked out our horses and went for a 90 minute ride through some of the most pristine and scenic trails the Appalachian Mountains have to offer.

Later that afternoon we took a dip in the pool, and then we treated ourselves to a relaxing massage in the heated jacuzzi. It was most refreshing, and the views from the pool and jacuzzi were equally magnificent.

Sitting in the big comfy chair near the fire in the Main Lodge later that evening with an aperitif in one hand and a good book in the other was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

horseback riding vacations
During our stay we rode our horses on many of the other trails at the ranch, fished for trout, mined for gems, played golf, pool, ping pong, video games, occasionally helped some of the other guests with their jigsaw puzzles, visited local craft shops, and took part in a rodeo!!!

It was awesome, and we didn’t want to leave the beautiful and friendly confines of the Clear Creek Dude Ranch, but we took solace in the fact that we will most definitely pass this way again.

Carving Out A Special Family Visit To Disney World

June 30, 2008 By: Mr Vacation Category: Vacations

It’s not called one of the happiest places on earth for nothing! We’re talking of course about Disney World, one of the largest and most popular theme parks on the planet.

Though there are many vacation locations and activities from which to choose all over the world, there is nothing quite like a memorable Disney vacation. They have attractions, rides, hotels galore, and so many things to see and do that you would have to take 10 trips to Disney World to see it all.

Before you go though, you do need to keep some tips in mind. Sure, it can be a great adventure for your whole family, but if you do not come prepared you might end up ruining your entire vacation.

The best time of the year to travel to Disney World is during their off season. This is usually around January to early February and also the summer. There will be less people, shorter lines to wait in, and fewer hassles in general, as well as the ability to see and experience more since there will be fewer people filling the parks.

Additionally, the weather will be very pleasant since the daytime temperatures in January and early February run around 65 to 70 degrees. Although the summer goes hot, that simply results in fewer crowds for you.

When taking a vacation to Disney World, consider staying in one of the hotels outside of, but close to, the parks. Those are normally less expensive than hotels inside, but still have shuttles to take you to and from the park - so nearby convenience isn’t lost. These hotels are less crowded as well.

If, on the other hand, you stay at a hotel inside the park, you will have the convenience of taking a monorail right to your room, helping to avoid parking lots and the hassle of getting in and out of the park. It is more expensive, though, so you will do well to evaluate the pros and cons prior to making a hotel decision.

Another tip for a great vacation at Disney World is to plan your “in park visitation strategy” before arrival. It is also advisable to you buy your tickets before even traveling to Orlando. The benefit will be fewer lines, and you will be able to be one of the first visitors in the park.

There are plenty of activities in Disney World, especially for the kids. Disney characters walk around the parks, while you enjoy and a seemingly endless array of rides, games, and entertainment to keep your children busy for the entire day. They real question is who will wear down first - the kids or their parents.

If you have a teenager, you may want to plan a day at Wet ‘n Wild, a water park they are sure to love. Magic Kingdom and Epcot are geared largely toward teenagers, so it is great to plan at least one day at each.

Finally for the adults, there is more than enough to do during the evenings. Pay a few extra dollars and hire a Disney-hired babysitter while you go out for a great dinner at one of the many famous restaurants. Or you could be bold and head to Pleasure Island to dance and laugh the night away.

No matter when you go to Disney World or what you do there, you are sure to have one of the best times of your life!

Day Trips to Alaska’s Ports of Call are Worthwhile When Cruising Alaska

June 29, 2008 By: Mr Vacation Category: Vacations

Alaska is a land of enchantment. It is situated high above the other forty-nine states like a jewel in a crown. One way to see this beautiful state is from the decks of a cruise ship.

Are you interested in taking a cruise? Tourists don’t have to lift a finger to do anything. The purpose of cruising is to relax and enjoy the surroundings. A cruise to Alaska is no different. Some believe that a cruise is the best way to see the state of Alaska and all it has to offer.

There are many facets to the state of Alaska. Tourists can travel along the Inside Passage to various ports of call. Also known as the “Panhandle”, visitors are treated to cities like Sitka, Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan. Many may not know these names but each is a part of the beautiful landscape that is Alaska.

Many waterways in Alaska are visited by cruise ships. Other Alaska cruise options include exploring Prince William Sound, the Bering Sea, and the Gulf of Alaska. For students of history, a piece of land used to connect our continent with the European continent and animals traversed the Bering land bridge. A variety of wildlife surrounds these waterways along with other interesting views.

Glaciers are the main attraction while on these waters. One of the most well known is Columbia Glacier. Glaciers are moving ice forms that can be as massive below the surface as they are above. Glaciers have formed over millions of years and are pieces of the past existing in the present for all to enjoy.

National parks are dominant in Alaska. Two that can be visited while on a relaxing Alaskan cruise are Glacier Bay National Park and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park which features Hubbard Glacier. For the more adventurous among cruising tourists, you can actually land on a glacier and go for a walk! Helicopter rides can be secured during shore excursions and people can actually have the opportunity to see these ancient ice blocks up close and personal.

Alaskan cruises can be booked for a week at a time or for shorter time periods. Weeklong cruises include trips along the Inside Passage which includes the islands northward along Alaska’s coast stretching from British Columbia to Juneau and up to Skagway. Alaskan glaciers have the option of roundtrip cruises or one-way passages that usually originate in Seattle, Washington, or Vancouver, British Columbia.

Shorter cruises offer day trips to many cities. One can visit Prince William Sound and Columbia Glacier. On the Gulf of Alaska, cruisers can see cities like Kodiak and Seward. We know Kodiak because of the bears that live there. Tourists have plenty of expedition and shore excursion options to see the native Alaska animals.

There is still much of Alaska that is untouched country. The land is still the way it was thousands and thousands of years ago. Visitors can see bears, sea lions, eagles, and other animals we rarely get to view unless we go to a zoo or animal park. Seeing these animals in their native habitat adds a new dimension to their character for us.

What do most people want to see when they visit Alaska? Yes, whales! Cruising to Alaska offers tourists the chance to partake in whale watching expeditions. Ready your camera for some awesome photographs.

Several cruise lines service Alaskan ports of call. All are similar but your personal tastes may make one more inviting than another. Holland America cruise lines provide a theme of Old World European style for their guests. Princess Cruise lines are more modern and appeal to a larger number of travelers because of their up-to-date amenities and comfort. Carnival Cruises are great for families traveling with children because there are many options for activities that suit everybody. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise lines also visit ports of call in Alaska.

English Vacation Destinations - Derby In The Peak District

June 26, 2008 By: Mr Vacation Category: Vacations

The City of Derby lies on the banks of the River Derwent in the County of Derbyshire in the East Midlands area of the UK in close proximity to the Peak District National Park, and the city is ideally located for Peak District holidays.

The city has a population of close to a quarter of a million and is the eighteenth largest settlement in England and has existed since Roman times. People who are native to the city are generally known as Derbians.

The Anglo Saxon Chronicle describes the city as divided by water. The two areas were known as the North Enclosure and the Irongate – the latter still being part of the City centre.

During the English Civil War the city was garrisoned by parliamentary troops and 1643 Sir John Gail was appointed the governor of Derby and in 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie set up camp there on his way south in an attempt to seize the crown.

If you visit at the start of December then you may see the Charles Edward Stuart Society parade through the city centre to a battle that culminates on the Cathedral Green.

The Peak District is beautiful and far removed from the hive of industrial activity that the city became with its general engineering works and the establishment of the famous Rolls Royce company – makers of the feted cars and of aeroplanes.

The city centre is only a few miles from the beautiful rolling hills that make up the shire and there are plenty of Peak District holiday cottages available to choose from most of the year round. Visitors can stay at guesthouses or at some of the farms in the area or even at one of the Peak District luxury hotels in the area.

A site that visitors should see is the twisted spire of the Cathedral in Chesterfield which is about seventeen miles north of the city but if you see it from the road try and keep your concentration on driving as the Spire will most definitely pull your gaze.

Nowadays the Peak district is great place for people to come and stay and see the rough stone walls and the stone buildings.

If you come to Derbyshire and you are driving then you should take care around the peaks as sheep and cows can often be seen crossing the roads from one grazing field to another.

There are lots of walks around the area where visitors can join a group or go by themselves. People also like to climb some of the hills and small mountains that are part and parcel of the charm of the peaks of Derbyshire.

Best Cruise Specials - The No Fail Cheap Cruise Strategy

June 22, 2008 By: Mr Vacation Category: Vacations

Great cruise deals seem to jump out at you non stop these days and the days of hunting down those bargains seem well and truly behind us.

The internet has certainly played a major part in promotion of cruise deals yet it alone has not been responsible. Cruise lines have had to respond to consumer demand and they’ve done this by building more ships and at the same time, bigger and better vessels.

Filling these ships many times a year means maximum exposure which has been great news for you the holidaymaker. Finding the best deals on cruises means simply logging onto your computer and visiting many of the sites dealing in cruise holidays. And there’s no shortage of them.

Using Travel Professionals

It really is not difficult anymore to find the best deals on cruises. The internet has added a complete new dimension to locating the best cruise deals and vacationers have been aware of this for sometime.

If you’re in the market for a great deal on a cruise then yes, you can commence your search on the internet but don’t do anything in the way of booking until you check with a real live travel professional as we’re about to explain.

Get The Best deals On Cruising

Your travel professional should always be your first port-of-call when looking for the best deals on cruises. Why? For example, don’t settle on the first quote you’re given.

When hunting around for the best quote spend time on the phone with different agents and use what is called as comparison cruise shopping. This means make a list of potential travel professionals, up to ten is great and spend a little time speaking with each of them.

Get a list of the best quotes from the first one you talk to and then use this list as leverage to get better quotes from the remainder. If the first agent quoted you $1000 for a 7 day/7night cruise to the Western Caribbean then when you speak with the next travel consultant, simply ask the question - “can you beat this quote?”

Most times, this system will get you much more than $100 off the original quote. Never accept the original price for cruise trips which are not scheduled to depart for at least six months.

Getting the best deals on cruises for vacations due to depart in 1-2 months will be difficult because these fares will already be discounted as the urgency to fill state rooms begins.

How To Travel Like Celebrities And Save

June 20, 2008 By: Mr Vacation Category: Vacations

The Best Kept Secret in the Travel Industry

A vacation home by the beach alone doesn’t cut it anymore. These days, Celebrities and billionaires want estates in England, condos in New York, pied a terres in Paris and chalets in Gstaad–plus the beach house and more. Thanks to the relatively new phenomenon of private membership clubs, they are getting them–along with staff to run them, and yachts and private jets to take them there.

While not all private membership clubs, also known as resort or destination clubs, offer their members an ownership stake in the clubs’ properties, these clubs represent the top tier of luxury vacationing, with members paying a one-time initiation fee of up to $4 million, annual dues of up to $67,500 and sometimes even daily fees of as much as $650, for the use of multi-million dollar castles, condominiums and hotel suites in some of the world’s most beautiful, and exclusive, corners according to Forbes Magazine.

These clubs want baby boomers and young adults making $400,000 per year and up! The age range is between 35 and 60 with the average age of 50 again according to Forbes Magazine. See the most expensive private membership clubs: http://www.forbes.com/2005/08/31/cx_sb_0901featslide.html?thisSpeed=35000. Well, we can live vicariously through them!

Now, for those of you who do not make $400,000 per year, there is a moderately priced travel membership with Global Resorts Network! This company is 22 years old and recently lowered the one-time membership fee from $10,000 to $3,000! A bargain basement sale compared to the expensive membership clubs’ entrance fees (see slideshow)! What you get in return is a lifetime of savings on 4 & 5 star resorts around the world and in the United States! You do not own property like some expensive travel clubs or timeshares, but you can expect to never pay annual dues or maintenance fees! All you have to do once you’re a member is to select your vacation destination anytime you want! There is even a newsletter highlighting beautiful resorts with the best rates! What is really unique with Global Resorts Network is their Hot Weeks! During certain times of the year, selected resorts are available for $298 per week! $300 per week at a 4 or 5 star resort is unheard of! And you are not getting the studio leftovers, but 1 bedroom units that can sleep up to 4 people! A steal!

To see what kind of properties Global Resorts Network has to offer is easy. Simply go to www.globalresortsregistry.com. Type in “vacation” as the username and “lookfor” as the password. You will see a sample list of GRN’s 5,000 properties! Imagine having access to hotels and resorts for under $799 per week!

Membership clubs are definitely catching on! Whether you are wealthy and want a prestigious getaway or a family working hard to afford vacations every year, everybody wants to save on their travel dollars and have a slice of their own paradise! Having your own travel membership makes financial sense when you consider the amount of money you pay per night when you use one of the travel search engines (Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, Hotels.com) to book your hotel or resort. Even calling the hotel or resort directly is not going to be any cheaper! Why? Because the travel search engines and the hotels are limited to availability of rooms left and peak season. The rates will fluctuate due to demand. Not so with Global Resorts Network. The company owns thousands of resorts and timeshare properties and can offer their members low rates year after year without regard to such limitations. A great example is the popular Sheraton Vistana Resort in Orlando, Florida. The rate for a 1 bedroom unit for 1 week is $655 through GRN. The same unit through Expedia for 1 week is $1,313! The extra $650 can be used for food/drinks and souvenirs! By booking through Expedia, your vacation is costing you an extra $650 that you could spend elsewhere or save! Now wouldn’t that be nice?

Disneyland Paris

June 19, 2008 By: Mr Vacation Category: Vacations

The European version of the Disney franchise was the second to open outside of America, after the theme park in Tokyo. Disneyland Paris comprises of Disneyland Park and the Walt Disney Studios Park. It struggled to gain sufficient visitors at first but expansion and new attractions have improved its prospects.

The theme parks share much the same characteristics at the different locations with some individual variations. The Disneyland Park at Disneyland Paris has the familiar areas known to visitors. Main Street USA is a nostalgic look at small town life from a bygone age, with horse driven vehicles, arcades and shops, and a City Hall. Frontierland is a journey back to the Old West with a riverboat and Wild West heroes. The kids love Adventureland and the pirates and Indiana Jones. Fantasyland is home to Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and Sleeping Beauty’s castle. Discoveryland has a Jules Verne themed Mysteries of the Nautilus and an updated version of the Space Mountain roller coaster called Space Mountain: Mission 2. This has a hill launch and two inversions and was the first version to have a music soundtrack. A railway stops at various locations.

In contrast to the theme park, the Walt Disney Studios Park focuses on the bread and butter industry that launched it, i.e. movies and television. This part of Disneyland Paris is divided into four areas, with tours, rides and themed boutiques. Visitors gain an insight into how animation is achieved at the Animation Courtyard. There is a studio tram tour, a tour of a typical television studio and an attraction called Armageddon: Special Effects. The exciting Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster features rock band Aerosmith as a theme. Plans for expansion have taken place and a new ride is scheduled to come on line in 2007 or 2008. Called The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, it is a simulated freefall ride based on the cult TV show, The Twilight Zone.

Always looking to bring visitors back for return visits, Disneyland Paris likes to keep up with the times in addition to featuring the old classics. The recent working partnership with the production studio, Pixar has resulted in a long list of movie hits. One of these is Toy Story and its sequel. In April 2006, a new attraction was added to Disneyland Park called Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast. It’s a 1930s themed ride and shooting gallery based on Toy Story 2. It may have had a rocky beginning, but Disneyland Paris looks set for the future, to infinity and beyond.

You Don’t Have To Be A Millionaire To Have Your Own Destination Wedding

June 08, 2008 By: Mr Vacation Category: Vacations

In fact, destination weddings are so incredibly popular. Over the past 10 years, destination weddings have increased over 400 percent.

Destination weddings are filling a need among engaged couples. Amazingly one out of every six couples getting married for the first time choose a destination wedding. Incredibly that number rises to 61% for couples getting remarried. For most couples, destination weddings offer a chance to celebrate in style. Who would not want to get married in a wedding castle?

The trend for marriages, at least in the United States, is that the couples are older and more mature than one generation ago. They are overall, looking for a more relaxed and intimate wedding where they feel they can enjoy themselves more because they are not thinking about making everyone else happy. Today wedding couples focus more on themselves.

For those seeking seclusion, destination weddings are the best way to guarantee privacy on the big day. Wedding crashers will not be a problem.

One of the greatest reasons to consider a destination wedding; much less tension amongst friends and family. They have no idea how to plan this or what you have to do, so if you want to avoid “the family wedding blues,” this type of wedding may just fit the bill perfectly. If you have interfering parents or parents in law a destination wedding in a country with a different language will slow down the interference factor something considerable.

If you want to have an incredible wedding, you can’t beat a destination wedding. They are definitely a trend and growing every second.

Destination weddings turn a wedding into a longer celebration, one that’s a little bit more intimate because you usually have fewer guests. A destination wedding is more romantic since it takes it out of a ballroom or catering hall to a setting with some spectacular vista.

A disadvantage is that the cost of transportation alone can be too substantial for most of your invited guests. It is advisable to account for extra money which might be needed to pay for close family who cannot afford to travel to your destination, but who you particularly want to attend.

Usually between one third and one half of the guests that you invite actually attend.

The average cost of this type of wedding is usually around $15,000 euros for 30 people. Although this seems much less than you probably anticipated, remember, this does not include airfare, accommodations and paying for parents and close friends and family, if they would be unable to attend otherwise. Also, that price tag is usually for about half the amount of guests you would invite to a typical wedding.

To ensure you get your fairytale wedding it is essential to secure the services of a wedding planner who resides where you have decided to get married. They will know the area far better than you do and will steer you toward the best vendors and resources for the amount of money you want to spend. This is even more essential if you are getting married in a country with a different language that you do not speak fluently.

With nearly 20% of all weddings being in a destination other than where they live, it is becoming an extremely popular alternative. Wedding planners are scrambling to try to cash in on this very popular choice.

Don’t forget, if you decide to tie the knot in an exotic location, you should set up a wedding website with all dates, suggestions for lodging, options for traveling there, directions and pictures of the location so they can make an informed decision.

A french château will enchant you with its fairytale atmosphere and dreamy environment, providing guests with a magical wedding experience. There is nothing quite like a castle wedding to give you beautiful surroundings both inside and outside. The advantages of using a wedding chateau is that you will be able to house a large number of guests in a fabulous location.
